The Pahalgam tragedy on April 22, 2025, is what inspired the establishment of Hindu Diwas. And, interestingly enough, Hindu Diwas coincidently falls on Earth Day. This meaningful and poetic coincidence reflects Hinduism’s principal truth of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—”The world is one family”—which is a perspective on world unity and care for the earth from Upanishads.
Hindus have historically placed great importance on nature, and sacred rivers such as Ganga (the Ganges), as well as trees such as the Peepal, and more.. so this is a divine call to action.
Hindu Diwas on April 22, has been chosen to be a day to show reverence for the earth, while practicing a better way to live with sustainable practices. Just think about proposals for a day such as this—tree-planting drives, adopting sustainable rituals in temples, organizing webinars about how to live sustainable lives rooted in Hindu philosophy, and the above is just a few suggestions. Not only does this reflect what our community stands for, but it will also show the world that caring for the earth is our dharma.
As the Bhagavad Gita reminds us, “Everything happens for a reason.” Let us make Hindu Diwas is a day of environmental stewardship, and cultural pride from the lens of Hinduism. If you have ideas for making April 22 a truly Hindu Diwas, form a volunteer group to lead things, or support us through Buy Me a Coffee, please continue to share your ideas along with action so we may take care of our Hindu heritage and our earth as one united family!
